My Hometown

This home is similar to one I grew up in and is located in the same neighborhood:

Flip it over and it's my childhood home... almost.  Close enough anyway.  My neighborhood was filled with homes like this.  Average split level, 3/4 bedroom, 1 1/2 or 2 bath homes.  The homes sat on beautiful streets with plenty of shade and mature trees...

This is an example of the monstrosities that are taking over my old neighborhood:

What the hell is this?!  McMansion?  Does the owner of this eye sore even realize that they've helped to destroy a BEAUTIFUL neighborhood?  Do they even care?  I'm sure they're beautiful homes, both inside and out, but an equally beautiful home (with character) was torn down to make room for... This.

I think the biggest disaster of all is that this home is not the only one like it in the neighborhood.  Apparently the American People are in a quest for the biggest, the largest, the most in everything they own.  Big SUV's, big houses, even big food portions...

I've recently found out that three homes on the street directly across from my childhood home have been changed.  Two were completely torn down and replaced with homes similar to the above and the other one was "remodeled" although I can't even see the original home in what is standing there now.

The town I grew up in, Naperville, IL, was a fantastic town to raise your kids in.  Naperville used to be in the top 50 towns to raise your kids until recent years.  I think it's because it got too big.  There are 5 high schools, a downtown that is more like a little city, and I'm sure there is the crime that comes with that many people.  Naperville made the list this year, but in the 54th place.  Yeah, that's close to the top 50 but it's not really.

I just think it's a shame that such a wonderful town, one that I have very fond memories of, has become this place where you buy a home in a great neighborhood only to tear it down and build another that doesn't even look good.  It kind of reminds me of that Sesame Street song "one of these things is not like the other..."
